The Sterilization Services of Tennessee facility at 2396 Florida Street in Memphis, Tennessee has exposed nearby residents to harmful levels of Ethylene Oxide (EtO), a human carcinogen.
A risk assessment completed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in July of 2022 revealed that the facility was releasing dangerous levels of EtO into the air, increasing the risk for cancers for people living in the South Memphis community. The emissions from the plant are so high that people who live closest to it have a cancer risk of 2,000 additional cases per one million people.

Because of the dangers posed by using this compound, the U.S. EPA classified it as a human carcinogen in December 2016.
EtO is used to make various industrial chemicals, such as ethylene glycol. It is also used as a fumigant in agricultural products and a sterilant for medical equipment.
